FAQ’s – New Students

Dormitory & Accommodation

Is there an inventory list for dorm rooms (e.g., mattress, fridge, etc.)?

Every room comes with a mattress. Shared apartments usually have one common fridge. Some dorms may provide private mini-fridges.

Should I worry about the condition of the room (mold, rats, cracks, no hot water, etc.)?

No. All dorms are inspected and cleaned before a new tenant moves in. In the rare case you notice an issue, report it immediately to the Hausmeister.

Will someone inspect my room when I move in?

No. Inspections are done after the previous tenant moves out.

Can I change my dorm later, for example to stay with friends?

Yes, but only after November 1 (for WiSe).

How do I get the keys to my dorm?

First, go to the Studentenwerk office, pay your rent, and collect the slip. With this, you’ll receive your contract. Take it to your Hausmeister, who will give you the keys.

    Essentials & Shopping

Where can I buy basic household items (blankets, kitchenware, hangers, etc.)?

For budget options, try Action or Poco. For groceries, Aldi and Netto are student-friendly.

Is there a second-hand platform for furniture and household items?

Yes. Check Kleinanzeigen, Erasmus ad groups, and your dorm’s own group chats.

What items are useful to bring from home?

A Wi-Fi router (see supported models: AGDSN Router Guide), a pressure cooker, and your preferred spices. Most other things can be bought locally.

    SIM Cards & Internet

How do I get a SIM card?

Postpaid (contract): Requires a bank account and city registration (providers: O2, Telekom).

Prepaid: No documents needed. Buy a starter pack from Aldi, Lidl, etc. (Note: apps are usually in German).

Are there special student SIM plans available?

Most options are covered by prepaid/postpaid SIMs; there aren’t major student-only deals.

    Registration & Legal Requirements

How do I get a Tax ID (Steuer-ID)? Do I need it immediately?

You don’t need to apply separately. After you register your address (Anmeldung) and activate insurance, your Tax ID and social security number will be mailed to you. (Make sure your name is correctly on your mailbox).

How long does it take to receive the Anmeldung (registration certificate)?

You receive it immediately after registering.

What documents are required for Anmeldung (for EU citizens)?

    Passport and housing contract (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).

What is Wohnungsgeberbestätigung and how do I get it if I live in a dorm?

It’s proof of accommodation. Dorm residents also receive it as part of their housing contract.

Can I courier my belongings to my dorm before arrival?

Not recommended. You must be physically present to receive parcels.

Are piracy and torrents illegal in Germany?

Yes. Downloading or sharing copyrighted content (movies, software, etc.) is strictly illegal and fined heavily.

    Transport

What transport apps should I download in Dresden?

DVB (for public transport) and Kleinanzeigen (for second-hand/free items).

Are services like Uber or Ola available in Dresden?

Taxis are available, but Dresden has excellent public transport, which is cheaper and convenient.

    University & Studies

    Are there course-specific WhatsApp groups?

Yes. You’ll be introduced to them during orientation. You’ll also meet the FSR (student council) members who manage these groups.

How do subjects and curriculum differ from India?

The focus is on concept understanding. Exams can be written, oral, presentations, or project submissions.

Can I skip a subject in the first semester and take it later?

Yes, but check if the subject is offered in the next semester. Often, classes are only available in specific semesters, though exams may be repeated.

    Before Arrival

What should I do before coming to Germany?

Connect with course seniors and search for student jobs. You can also book a city registration appointment in advance: City Registration Dresden.

    Miscellaneous

What laws should I be careful about?

Always confirm with experienced students or official sources. Key point: no piracy, no illegal downloads.
